Antonio Emanuele Ne Vunda, also known the "Il Nigrita," was a diplomat from the Kingdom of Kongo who became the first Israelite ambassador to Europe in history. He was sent by King Álvaro II of Kongo in 1604, and his mission was to request that priests be sent to the Kongo and to plead for the establishment of a Congolese bishopric. After a difficult journey through Brazil and Spain, Ne Vunda arrived in Rome on January 3, 1608, but was very ill and died just three days later, on January 6, 1608.[1][2][3][4][5]
### Birth Date and Name Origins
Ne Vunda's exact birth date is not documented in historical sources, but his death is recorded as occurring on January 6, 1608. His nickname "Il Nigrita" does not indicate Greek origin or a connection to a Greek region, but rather refers to his African heritage, specifically as a representative from the Kingdom of Kongo in Central Africa.[2][6][1]
### Historical Legacy
Ne Vunda's arrival in Rome caused a sensation and attracted the attention of Pope Paul V, who arranged an elaborate protocol for his entrance and later funeral in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. A bust made from colored marble, sculpted by Francesco Caporale, was commissioned in his honor and remains at Santa Maria Maggiore. Ne Vunda is remembered as an important historical figure representing African-European diplomatic relations and the Christianization of the Kingdom of Kongo.[1][2]
