The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD when Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor, was deposed by the Germanic chieftain Odoacer. This event marked a profound turning point in world history, occurring approximately 122 years after the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD—a period when many Jews from the Southern Kingdom (Tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi) fled out of the land. According to some traditions, these groups migrated into Africa, including the mountains and regions of West Africa, seeking refuge in response to both prophetic instructions and Roman persecution.[1][2][4][5]
 
The Roman Empire’s ultimate collapse did not mark the end of its cultural or religious influence. Nearly 1,100 years later, during the Renaissance, many historians and religious scholars trace the revival of Roman power and culture to the emergence of the Holy Roman Empire and the era's artistic, intellectual, and theological upheaval. During this period, a phenomenon known as Iconoclasm—defined as the deliberate destruction or alteration of religious imagery—was given new fuel by the widespread creation of European depictions of biblical figures in the image of European nobility and leaders.
 
A prominent example frequently discussed in this context is Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI of Rome. Renaissance-era painters reportedly used Borgia’s likeness as a model for representations of Jesus Christ, which fundamentally shaped the prevailing Western image of Christ and contributed to what some criticism refers to as “the image of the beast” described in the Book of Revelation 13. This period witnessed the rise of a new visual language for Christian faith, marking a new chapter in the relationship between religious power, art, and imperial authority.
 
Combined, these movements—mass migration following the destruction of Jerusalem, the transformation of Roman authority, and the Renaissance reinvention of Christian iconography—highlight the deep historical links between empire, migration, theology, and the enduring influence of Rome on global religious traditions.[2][4][8][1]
